The United States and China agreed to start simultaneously abolishing existing tariffs as part of the “phase one” trade agreement,  officials of both countries said on Thursday. The deal hasn’t been completed yet and exact dates remain unknown but, the move sparked controversy among several White House hawks who wanted the President to maintain a hardline stance against China.Chinese Ministry of Commerce said that both sides agreed to phase out duties in a stage-by-stage fashion but, the speed of deescalation is yet unknown. Sources in the White House told Reuters that the tariff cancellation would be part of the interim deal, which is still being drawn up for signature by Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said in an interview with Fox Business Network: “At this time, there is no agreement to abolish any existing fees as a condition for the first phase of the deal”.There is a chance the agreement could still fail, taking into account how unpredictable Trump was before.“There’s no concrete agreement to phase out tariffs”, said Michael Pillsbury, Trump’s adviser.
